3 SLEEPS TO GO!!! How are you preparing for Jesus' birthday? I want to invite you to sign up to serve at one of Trinity's COSY SPACES as part of your Christmas celebrations, and here's why...
I've been thinking a lot about how we celebrate Christmas as God's People. I've had a number of conversations and messages recently that have been challenging and it's led me to ask the question, what does Jesus want from His Church on His birthday? What gift would he ask for from us?
Well - the obvious answer would be "OURSELVES" - we give ourselves, every part of our life, our time, our gifts, our resources, our energy, to God - and of course not just for a day, or for the Christmas Season, but every day! But what does that mean? What does that look like?
I think Jesus wants a Church that follows in his footsteps and whole-heartedly gives themselves to serving as Jesus served. In Mark 10:45 we read these words...
"...for even the Son of Man did not come to be served, BUT TO SERVE, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
You just need to read the preceding verses in chapter 10 to realise that Jesus is challenging his followers to serving and servantship - just as he had been doing. In the end that would lead to the cross, but in his living, Jesus demonstrated what "being a servant" would, and should, look like - "whoever wants to be first, must be a servant to all" (Mark 10:44).
How will you be a servant to all?
I know that there are a multiplicity of ways that we can do this, and not just over Christmas, but as part of our daily life - however, doing something that serves others over Christmas does feel like a reasonable gift to offer Jesus on his birthday!
Over the next 2 weeks of "festive holidays" we will continue to serve others through our 3 cosy spaces:
These are simple places of serving others - we gather; we make, serve and eat food with others; and we welcome, we listen, we talk with strangers who are becoming friends. Sounds a lot like the kind of thing Jesus did!
We're asking for a minimum of 6 people to serve in each of these Cosy Spaces, including next week during the Christmas holidays - we still need more helpers for them - and also into the new year.
Signing up is easy, just email Jane (cosyspace@trinitychurchperth.
Lord, thank you that you came to serve and give your life. May we do likewise in love for you and for others, in Jesus' name. Amen!
Grace & Peace
